background on plans for the Southern Islands About Dolphin Quest and dolphins in captivity
Kerzner International Group Brings in Hurricane Dolphin Victims Extract "Sixteen dolphins displaced during Hurricane Katrina have been exported to a Kerzner International Group (Kerzner) facility in The Bahamas. The dolphins' former home, the Gulfport Oceanarium was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and the dolphins had been housed temporarily in various facilities throughout the United States This news is the latest twist in a sorry tale. During November we received various reports that Kerzner had been scouring the world looking for dolphins to fill its new Atlantis resort being built in The Bahamas." AWI Calls on Kerzner International to Halt Completion of Atlantis Dolphinarium (pdf file) November 17, 2005: Kerzner International Group recently announced the creation of Kerzner Marine Foundation whose mission is to "to foster the preservation and enhancement of global marine ecosystems through scientific research, education and community outreach." At the same time, Kerzner is completing its latest Atlantis resort in the Bahamas, including a captive dolphin facility. Wild dolphins typically range over 40 miles every day and are highly social animals. To place these sentient animals in a tank is the equivalent of a human being confined in a small closet. AWI has written to Solomon Kerzner, Chairman of the Group urging him to reconsider the decision in line with the Foundation's stated mission. Concerns Over Safety Of Dolphins March 09, 2005 Bahamas B2B.com Extract: "The issue first arose when residents became concerned about the operation, both in terms of the safety of dolphins and its effect on the surrounding area. Environmentalists and Grand Bahama residents have raised concerns about the safety of 15 captive dolphins because of a dredging operation being conducted in their holding pen." Concern Grows Over Dolphin Import 18 November 2005 on EarthDive.com Extract: "An international campaign against Kerzner International’s planned import of a pod of 40 dolphins from a Pacific island nation into the Bahamas has re-energized the local lobby against keeping the well-loved mammals in captivity." Discussion about the live dolphin exhibit at Atlantis on the Bahamas Community forum Environmental Impact of development such as Atlantis on the Bahamas Anchor Projects Under Scrutiny 8th August By Quincy Parker Extracts" Amid concerns about the oversight of anchor projects around The Bahamas, Minister of Financial Services and Investments Vincent Peet has disclosed the "recent" formation of an oversight committee in his ministry...Mr. Ingraham called for the government to institute more rigorous oversight of the Atlantis development, as well as the other anchor projects throughout the country..."When we did Phase Two, we didn’t have the technical expertise to monitor the construction. We engaged a very experienced foreigner to come to The Bahamas, whose only job was to be on [the] site, to ensure that they complied with the rules," Mr. Ingraham revealed. On at least one occasion that consultant brought construction to a halt because the developers were attempting to proceed in an unapproved manner, according to the former prime minister who said that the project was stopped in its tracks until the proper systems and protocols were in place." Part of the larger scheme of things Tuesday, August 29, 2006 By the Green Hornet Extract: "The tragic effects of the Indonesian tsunami showed us that the destruction of coastal habitat - whether mangroves, coral reefs or sea grass - had a very clear connection to the disaster. Trash the protective ecosystems to build shrimp farms and resorts, and you reap the consequences: death and destruction. Nobody thought of that when they were busy making a fast buck logging, dredging and filling ...whatever it took to develop their particular money-maker." Athol Island activists complain By JASMIN BONIMY, Guardian Staff Reporter Extract "Concerned Paradise Island tour operators have requested a meeting with Minister of Financial Services and Investments Vincent Peet in a bid to protect Athol Island and its surrounding sea gardens. Athol Island is the site of a new golf course for the third phase of the Atlantis development. "We urgently request a meeting to have our minds put at rest that our government will make the right decision to save Athol Island, protect our coral reefs and the livelihood of all the tour operators," Do visitors really enjoy Atlantis? "My only complaint is that the Atlantis is so removed from the Bahamian culture that it could literally be anywhere: Southern California, Florida, or any other tropical location." on the TravelSense Community website "Although the Atlantis is a gorgeous place to sight-see, it's not a very great place to stay. The rooms really weren't that impressive given how much they cost. The meal plan was a total rip-off." Jacqueline Mackie Paisley Passey's blog |
