Times 2 Mar 07 Authority on tropical plants roped in to keep new resort green THE man behind the leafy exteriors of the Esplanade and Suntec City has been roped in by Genting International to protect the trees and plants at its new Sentosa resort. British landscape architect Henry Steed, 60, will oversee landscaping and flora conservation at Genting's 49ha site. Mr Steed, who heads the 18-member ICN Design International, can expect his work to be thoroughly scrutinised by conservation groups. Sentosa keeps 70 per cent of its terrain green and is constantly reminded by green groups to balance development with conservation. Genting has said it will follow this guideline. That means it must preserve two heritage trees and most of the forested areas where the resort's water park and upscale villas will be located. Mr Steed, a recognised authority on tropical plants, has lived in Singapore for 25 years. Yesterday, he said he welcomed green watchdogs, but warned them to steel themselves for a 'shock period'. Green areas may be cleared overnight during construction, but valuable trees will be replanted, he said. links Related articles on Southern Islands Development including the Sentosa IR |
