Nature activities and events happening this week 29-25 Mar 07 20 Mar (Tue): Sowing Seeds for Global Peace talk by Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute A public sharing session by Kelly Kok Executive Director Jane Goodall Institute, Taiwan. Last year when Dr Jane Goodall visited Singapore, teachers and students who attended her talk were visibly inspired. A group of educators and volunteers formed the local branch of the Jane Goodall Institute to promote the Roots & Shoots (R&S) program locally. A successful first sharing for schools was held on 20 January this year in the Singapore American School. In March, we are happy to have invited Ms Kelly Kok to give a series of talks to schools and the public. She will be sharing with us more about the R&S program, the benefits of becoming a member and examples and best practices from Roots & Shoots projects worldwide. For enquiries about the talk, email jgi@singapore.com 20 Mar-12 Apr: Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters Exhibition at the National Library Recently launched by PUB, Singapore's national water agency, the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters programme will transform Singapore's waterbodies into beautiful streams, rivers and lakes. A public exhibition was held at the Asian Civilisations Museum from 6 to 11 February to share these exciting plans with the public. Following the public exhibition, PUB will be bringing the exhibition to various community places such as community centres, shopping malls and libraries so that all Singaporeans will be able to witness the exciting projects coming to a waterbody near them. Take a peek into the future as the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters exhibition comes to the National Library. Venue: The National Library, Lee Kong Chian Reference Library - Level 1- The Plaza Contact: National Library website contact page 21 Mar (Wed): Public Seminar on “Climate Change and Push into the Carbon Economy” By Mr Stuart McCreery, Senior Associate Evans & Peck. The necessary responses remain adaptation and abatement. Adaptation means physically being prepared for the impacts of hotter, wetter times with greater extremes. Adaptation also means taking economic advantage of the shift in commercial externalities which will flow from having to pay for the privilege of putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Mr Stuart McCreery will explore the evolution of the carbon economy and discuss some the key developments in the field. Using this dive site, Ivan initiated a three-phase project to investigate the mantas’ migratory patterns by cataloguing the mantas seen there daily. Phase I (August 16-30th 2006) yielded 31 unique mantas with two rays returning to the site within the research period. Images of individual mantas, daily weather and tidal conditions have been recorded and will be presented during this talk. Phase II of the project, slated for August 2007, will include more participants and guest researchers while fine-tuning data collection. The project aims to promote manta ray conservation in SE Asia through collaborations with local researchers in Singapore, Indonesia and other conservation bodies worldwide. It is also a DAN training resource center and DAN medical treatment center for diving illnesses. These course are conducted by LTC (NS)(Dr) Michael Ong, a diving doctor with 12 years of experience in the Navy. It will be exciting and offers much opportunities for practice and experience on real patients. Mar (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walkYou'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 9.30am: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Wetland Reserve Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time.
