Nature activities and events happening this week 14-20 Aug 06 15 Aug (Tue): The Values of Nature in the Singapore Context Dr Ho Hua Chew, Chairman of the Conservation Committee in the Nature Society (Singapore) gives this talk which focuses nature conservation in tune with the local context. There can be no doubt that nature or biodiversity has values for humanity all over the world, but in the practice of advocacy for nature conservation, the sort of values that have been emphasized as justifications elsewhere may not be relevant or pertinent for a country like Singapore. Given the peculiarity of the local situation in terms of its prevailing ecological, economic & socio-cultural conditions, there is an urgent need to think through carefully the sort of value orientation that is required in the Singapore context in order that nature conservation can be promoted here with a realistic expectation of success. A T. rex named SUE and Friends!" event, seminar by Patricia Vickers-Rich (Chair of Palaeontology, Monash University Founding Director, Monash Science Centre ) Topic 1 : Dinosaurs and Jackhammers! The polar dinosaurs of the late Mesozoic This discussion will look at the places around the world and what is has been like to collect them and bring them back to the museums. This talk will relate to many of the specimens in the exhibition. Topic 2 : Dinosaurs on Skiis! This talk will concentrate on how some dinosaurs survived the rigors of polar climates and why, if any dinos survived the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, these would have been the ones. Again, many of the dinos in your exhibition will be discussed. Aug (Sat): Kids' Fun with Sea TurtlesWith the Education Group and friends. Want to know more about Sea Turtles? Where they live, what they eat and how you can help protect them from the many dangers they face? Come join us at East Coast Park where over 70 baby Hawksbill Turtles showed up a few months ago. This fun session for kids aged 5 to 11 will focus on sea turtle ecology, sea turtle stories and what each of us can do to help turtles live happy and free for many generations to come! We'd also be making sea turtle nests and learning sea turtle craft! Meeting place for this morning session at the beach will be confirmed upon registration. For the third year, wildfilms -- a group of wacky volunteers -- have been filming Singapore's shores. Ria shares the strange but common sights they encountered and some of the things learnt through the year bout our shores. Please register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis at the Visitor Centre. more Time: 9am, 10am, 11am and 4pm. Aug (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walkYou'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 3pm: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children. Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen. Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 20 Aug (Sun): Green Transport Week Launch and Leisure Cycle & Scenic Walk Come for a leisurely Sunday bike ride in Changi Village organized by bicycle portal togoparts.com and be treated to a complimentary brunch at Changi Village Hotel at the end of it. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. So register early as places are limited! Dr Amy Khor, SPS for Environment, is guest-of-honour for the launch of Green Transport Week (GTW) which seeks to encourage the public to reduce negative impacts by using public transport, alternative forms of transport, choosing fuel efficient vehicles, good driving habits, and keeping vehicles well maintained. At the launch Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment will be flagging off cyclists on a leisure ride. Those not wishing to cycle can participate in a guided scenic walk instead. Both activities will be followed by an informal brunch. Bicycles will be provided upon request. Make your pledge for GTW on the Singapore Environmental Council website. Time: 9am - Noon Venue: Changi Village Hotel 20 Aug (Sun): Kent Ridge Ramble Only for NSS members The Nature Ramblers led by Ho Wah Loong will lead this 8km/4hr ramble. You'll enjoy the beautiful scenery from Canopy Walk and a good view of the PSA Container Port and southern islands from the top of the ridge. Good chance of spotting interesting birds along the way.
