4 May (Wed): Free talk on "Is the Kyoto Protocol Merely Irrelevant, or Positively Harmful, to the Efforts to Curb Global Warming?" By Prof. Marco Verweij

The Lee Kuan Yew School Public Policy National University of Singapore presents this talk. Prof Verweij will argue that this widely praised international treaty is insufficient, is not being implemented, would be prone to increase corruption, bad governance and international disagreement if implemented, and will not be renewed or strengthened. He will also outline an alternative set of proposals that aim to curb climate change on the basis of domestic policies that would facilitate those companies that are endeavouring to make renewable energy cheaper than fossil energy. Prof Verweij is associate professor of political science at the Singapore Management University, and an external fellow of the James Martin Institute for Science and Civiliation at Oxford University. more on the ecotax listing.

4 May (Wed): Free talk on "Status of Coral Reefs of the World" by Dr Clive Wilkinson, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Townsville

The Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2004 report documents how human activities continue to be the primary cause of the global coral reef crisis. The report details many new initiatives aimed at reversing this degradation such as by conserving the biodiversity, the economic value and beauty of coral reefs. If reefs are to survive as our natural heritage, we need to act locally to reduce direct human impacts and, globally, to combat greenhouse emissions.

Dr. Clive Wilkinson is the Principal Scientist at Australian Institute of Marine Science and also the Coordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (International Coral Reef Initiative). more on the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity website

free Nature Appreciation Walk

The 900m boardwalks take you through the forest then along the edge of the Reservoir. So you will encounter a wide range of wildlife from forest to aquatic creatures. And enjoy wonderful panaromas of waters surrounding by luxuriant forest. Shaded by the forest, the walk is pleasantly cool. more
