Residents on the island were reminded on 1 September that each household is only allowed to keep up to 10 chickens or ducks. This is one of the precautions against bird flu. The 19 families on Pulau Ubin were originally given two weeks to get rid of the extra birds. The deadline was Tuesday. The islanders, many of whom survive on backyard farming, have welcomed the one-week extension but say it's still not enough. Sales have been poor in the past few weeks, and farmers are hoping for an extension till the end of the year. Or, for some further compensation from the authorities. |
