Aceh restores 4,528 ha of mangrove areas

Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, (ANTARA News) - The Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) has restored some 4,528 hectares of mangrove forest in Aceh province, which were destroyed by tsunami in December 2004.

"The mangrove restoration program has been conducted in 10 coastal areas since July 2006. The replanting of mangrove trees has reached a successful rate of around 90 percent," Anas Mahmudi, head of the BRR`s coastal and environmental working unit, said here on Monday (12/4).

The coastal areas are located in Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, Aceh Selatan, Aceh Timur, Aceh Utara, Langsa, Bireuen, Pidie, Sigli, and Banda Aceh city.

The implementation of the mangrove restoration program is being evaluated by an independent team, which will work for 12 days as of Monday (Dec. 4).

The aim of the program was to develop a green belt with the participation of the people living along the coasts, Mahmudi explained. "The program has combined the environmental and economic aspects to empower people living near the coastal areas," he said.

Around 50,000 people are involved in the program which costs around Rp43 billion. Mangrove forests are important for the environment as they could become shelters for fish and other animals as well as wave barriers.(*)
