Apr (Mon): Talk on Marine Biodiversity of Cambodia
Cambodia has a short coastline, 435 km, facing the Gulf of Thailand between Thailand in the north and Vietnam in the south. Cambodia is also one of the poorest countries in the world and management of natural resources is hampered by lack of funding, lack of qualified staff, weak legislation and enforcement and lack of public awareness. In collaboration with the Department of Fisheries I have been sampling and photographing marine organisms for documenting the coastal marine biodiversity. Since July 2000 we have collected and photographed more than 500 species, we have published 4 posters for public awareness, presented results at international meetings, organized a workshop in Phnom Penh and expanded the marine Reference Collection in Sihanoukville. In this talk I will present some of the results from this project. Speaker: Dr. Kathe R. Apr (Tue): "Nudibranchs: succesful but unsung globe-trotters"
Nudibranchs are highly visible components of marine ecosystems. However most people don't realise how many of them are not native to the countries where they presently occur and have been transported around the globe by humans. In fact the original distribution of some of them will never be known with certainty. This lecture considers why some nudibranchs and not others are amenable to transportation by shipping and why nudibranchs, unlike other molluscs, never achieve the status of "pests" in their new countries and so go unnoticed. Richard Willan is Curator of Molluscs at the Northern Territories Museum in Darwin, Australia. He has wide-ranging systematic interests in nudibranchs and bivalves. "He has studied molluscs for more than 40 years and joined the MAGNT in 1992. He is an experienced diver and has carried out field work in much of Australia, also in Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, North America and Europe. He is a Past President of the Malacological Society of Australasia and Life Member of the Conchology Section of Auckland Museum. He has authored or co-authored four books, over 100 scientific papers, and numerous popular articles." Apr: ADEX (Asia Dive Expo)
A chance to learn more about our marine life with this bumper series of talks! Each participant at a talk will receive a PADI Marine Conservation Book (Limited to first 500) 22 Apr (Sat) 12 noon - 1pm Nemo and Neighbours - Zeehan Jaafar Caught 'Finding Nemo' in the movies? Have you ever wondered what kind of life a clownfish leads? Blue Water Volunteers proudly present this talk by Miss Zeehan Jaafar on clownfishes & their host anemones. What's the special relationship with anemones? Find out about clownfish development, courtship behaviour, parental care, social hierarchy and sex change! Guess what? 'Nemo' lives in the surprisingly rich waters of Singapore too! But pollution, coastal development and aquarium trade threatens their survival. Can we help to save them? 22 Apr (Sat): 3 - 4pm Life as a Marine Biologist - Jeffrey Low With 10 years of experience in the field, Jeffery will share with us his experiences and adventures (and misadventures) of being a marine biologist. What does being a marine biologist entail? Is it as glamourous as it sounds? Listen out for his fair share of stories and look out for photos of marine biologists in the 1980s. 23 Apr (Sun) 12 noon - 1pm Uncover Secrets of Singapore's Underwater - Jani Thuaibah Isa Tanzil Have you ever wondered what life lies beneath the seas around our island nation before? We may not be Manado or Sipadan, but we can still hold our own. Our marine life is still rich and diverse, colourful and fascinating, but most importantly, it is ours. This talk will showcase Singapore's marine habitats and bountiful diversity, as well as the whats and whys of marine conservation. And how an individual can contribute to preserving and conserving our natural heritage. 23 Apr (Sun): 3-4pm Life on the Edge: Living shores of Singapore - Ria Tan Don't need to swim! Don't need to dive! Ria shares her above-water photos and adventures on our rich shores, from the Southern shores to Changi and beyond. Blue Water Volunteers will also have a booth at the Expo to raise awareness about our own wild reefs. Come learn more about marine wildlife, play their fascinating game and more. 22 Apr (Sat): Earth Day Picnic with the Nature Society at the Botanic
Gardens
10.00am - 11.30am: 'Learning about Forest Restoration' walk with Shawn Lum and Plant Group. We will visit a primary forest that has suffered a bit over the years. We will ask ourselves: "How does one know what forests are good candidates for restoration? How might restoration be carried out?" Meet 9.45am at SBG Visitor Centre. 10.00am - 11.30am: Butterflywalk with the Butterfly Interest Group at SBG. Meet 9.45am at SBG Visitor Centre. The plant and butterflywalks culminate in seed planting plus post walk picnic lunch at Palm Valley. (bring food and mats to rest & relax!) 10.30am - 11.30am: Kids' Earth Day Fun with Seeds with the Education Group. Have fun with all kinds of fascinating seeds, big & small! In what games are seeds used? What plant comes from which seed? Each kid will get to plant a living seed for Earth Day, which will be transplanted to a butterfly garden later. Join in the spirit of Earth Day as we gather to plant seeds for Mother Earth and express our collective hopes for this planet we call home. The seedlings will be transplanted later to a public garden to benefit butterflies & insects. Planting followed by Picnic. 12pm - 1pm Earth Day Picnic Lunch at Palm Valley with Forest Dance Performance. Enjoy picnicking with friends, kids and pets. Bring your own mats, food and drinks, camera and sun protection. After picnic, snooze or check out our second hand Nature Book Sale, and take a stroll for some Birdwatching in the evening. The postcards for general distribution aim to increase awareness of our vulnerable native species, and the need to cherish and protect their habitats. Earth Day 'Orchids of Orangutan' painting exhibition by Eco-artist, Teresa Teo Guttensohn. Especially created for Earth Day, "Orchids of Orangutan" paints a hidden story of the exotic and the endangered. Teresa puts together her fondness for botany and orangutans in these artworks inspired by her jaunts to Borneo, and nearer home, her visits to Singapore Botanic Gardens itself. 4.30pm Earth Day Birdwatching at SBG with Tai Ping Ling. Join us on this evening walk through one of the best botanical gardens in the world. Many species of birds make this place their home and we may have a chance of spotting colourful species like Long-tailed Parakeet, Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot, Crimson Sunbird, Banded Woodpecker, Common Iora and Stork- billed Kingfisher. Apr (Sat): From Waste to Wow
As the name suggests, it’s about taking something worthless and transforming it into a useful, practical product. An excellent example of recycling and challenge to one’s creativity. In a first-ever competition of its kind in Singapore, jointly organized by RICOH and the Green Volunteers Network, this is supported by the Singapore Environment Council(SEC) and the National Library Board(NLB). Come and see more than 100 unusual creations on 22nd April 2006 (Earth Day) at the Plaza. Apr (Sat): Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve free guided walkYou'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Besides the abundant bird life, there is also other fascinating wildlife in the Reserve. more 3pm: Marine Fish Tour, a 30-minute tour introducing the fascinating fishes of Buloh. Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register. Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Apr (Sun): Birdwatching at Khatib Bongsu
Open only to NSS members With Ho Hua Chew. We will go on a circuit along the less frequented tracks. While on the lookout for birds, our main aim is to enjoy a pleasant ramble across a beautiful corner of our remaining country- side. For those who like to savour values of nature spiced with some amount of sweat. Finish at 1pm. Not suitable for young children. Time: Meet 7.30am at lobby of Blk 406 Yishun Ave 6.
