15 Mar (Wed): Talk on 'Digiscoping techniques and slideshow of rare birds of Singapore'

Ashley Ng who will share various techniques of Digi-scoping, Bino-scoping, Video-scoping and the latest Phone-scoping popular among birdwatchers and nature photographers worldwide. Ashley has been actively practising digiscoping since early '99, and will introduce us to this easy and economical way to take photos of wildlife and nature. Followed by slideshow featuring rare birds of Singapore - immortalised through his scope.

All are welcome.

18 Mar (Sat): Mangrove Clean up with the Green Volunteers Network

The Green Volunteers Network has adopted the mangroves at Pasir Ris Park (Sungei Tampines). A recent study has shown that one hectare of mangroves can absorb up to 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a year about the same amount emitted by a medium sized car during a year. So do your bit to conserve our mangroves. 60 volunteers needed.

This is hard but satisfying work. If you’re afraid to get muddy, your feet wet and hands dirty this is NOT an activity for you. If you’re a Teacher and want to bring students along we would need to know how many and their ages. When you book please leave your mobile number.

18 Mar (Sat): Free talk on "Snakes of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve"

Ms Shila Kumari, National Parks Board introduces the many different species of snakes have made Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve their home. You could find them coiled around trees or snoozing under small bushes. Join Ms Shila as she shares her observations on the many fascinating snakes that could be found here. Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis.

18 Mar (Sat): Free talk on "Nature Conservation In Singapore"

Dr Ho Hua Chew, Nature Society (Singapore Admission) will review the state of the natural environment in Singapore and the problems pertaining to the remaining wildlife and their natural habitats. The adequacy of the Singapore Green Plan for nature conservation will be evaluated and proposals for a more viable Green Plan will be recommended.

Explore the beauty and diversity of orchids at the Singapore Botanic Gardens with volunteer guides in this one-hour tour. Please register 15 minutes before the tour. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis at the Visitor Centre. more

9.30am: Prawn Watch: a hands-on introduction to traditional prawn farming. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 9am.

Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm, for walk in guests, register at the Visitor Centre. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register.
Tour duration: one to one and a half hours. Easy trails, some suitable for young children.
Entry charges: $1 per adult, 50cents per child/student/senior citizen.

19 Mar (Sun): Birdwatching at Bukit Batok Ave West
Open only to NSS members

This ex-kampung area is Wing Chong's home patch. Both parkland and grassland birds have made their homes in this mixed habitat. The walk will cover rather open areas where weather gets very hot as early as 9.30am. Be prepared with lots of water, caps or umbrellas. Suitable for all.

Time: Meet at 7.30am at car-park entrance in front of Bukit Batok Home for the Aged and Block 426 (Off Bukit Batok West Ave 2).

Open only to NSS members

Lim Kim Seng leads this census starting that covers many known bird-watching sites in Singapore. It is extra meaningful as an earth day event as 19 years of collected data has assisted the Society to piece together conservation proposals, assessed the state of our natural habitats, and given an overview of the general population trends of our avian friends. Your invaluable help to see and count is needed again! Help a site leader at a place nearest your home or one you are interested in.
