14 Dec (Wed): Talk on the current Avian Flu outbreak and its effect on birdwatchers

Dr Wee Yeow Chin leads this discussion. The avian flu has been raging throughout the region for some years now. There is great fear that once the H5N1 virus jumps species, and it has done so in a few cases, it may mutate to make it possible to spread from human to human. Should this happen, there would be a worldwide pandemic. There are those who blame the migratory birds for spreading the viruses. Certain countries have already culled wild birds in an effort to contain the spread of the disease. What are the facts? Are migratory birds really spreading the avian flu? How does this affect wild bird populations, especially the migratory birds that visit Singapore? Is culling the answer? And what is NSS's stand on this? Join us to discuss together avian flu issues that affect all of us.

Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Nature Society (Singapore) office at 510 Geylang Road #02-05 The Sunflower.
