Nature activities and events happening this week 7-13 Nov 05 27 Oct 05 - 17 Jan 06: ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’- Earth from above The French Embassy and the Singapore Environment Council present the world-renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s exhibition ‘La Terre Vue du Ciel’ or ‘Earth from Above’. Held on Orchard Road stretching across Liat Towers, Far East Shopping Centre, Hilton Hotel and Forum Galleria, this is the first of its kind in South East Asia. The exhibition is an aerial portrait of our planet captured in 120 breathtaking photos. See also the Fuji website 5-13 Nov: Walk via MacRitchie Trail to the Treetop Trail In celebration of Clean and Green Week: walk among the canopies of forest trees. Nature guide-led walk is chargeable at $120 per group of 15 persons. A minimum group size of 20 persons is required for registration. Registrations by phone at least 7 days in advance are encouraged. Contact: Genevie Chua 65545127 / 96616325 7 Nov (Mon): Pulau Ubin Sensory Trail walk In celebration of Clean and Green Week: The Sensory Walk is a 1.5km long earth trail showcasing some of the various landscapes seen in Ubin.A walk here brings the visitor through a vegetable garden, orchards, mangroves, secondary forests and coconut plantations. It is a relatively easy walk, requiring no special equipment other than a pair of comfortable shoes. Registrations by phone are encouraged. Time: 9.30am, Meet at Information Kiosk Contact: Info Kiosk 65424108 8 Nov (Tue): Tarsier Talk Special Seminar on Evolution and Biodiversity Evolutionary: Biology of Tarsiers by Dr. Myron Shekelle Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Studies University of Indonesia, Jakarta The process of revising tarsier taxonomy and naming so many new primate taxa will take years, and is confounded by a lack of holotypes for key taxa, as well as a lack of reference material for several of the putative new taxa. One implication for conservation is that biodiversity in Sulawesi may be underestimated by as much as an order of magnitude. Tarsiers may provide the best flagship species to promote conservation in the region. The route will include tarmac roads as well as earth trails. While the slopes along the way are relatively gentle, this tour is only for proficient cyclists. Registrations by phone are encouraged. Time: 9.30am, Meet at Information Kiosk Contact: Info Kiosk 65424108 10 Nov (Thu): Guided walk at Fort Canning Park In celebration of Clean and Green Week: The tour commences from Fort Canning Centre, a colonial building previously used as Army Barracks. Entering the Spice Garden (Singapore's first experimental and botanical garden), participants will be introduced to the wide variety of herbs and spice plants, such as ginger, nutmegs, cloves, and lemon grass. Besides the flora, the tour includes historical sites such as the Keramat Iskandar Syah and the Archaeological Dig Exhib ition. The tour ends at Fort Canning Park's latest attraction, Raffles Terrace, the area where Raffles built his house in 1823 during his third and last visit to Singapore. We will teach you some of the finer points to shorebird identification. Of course we will not forget the many other mangrove denizens that make Sungei Buloh their home. Here's a chance to help you learn at least 8 native plant species in a fun way! Form a team of 3-5 members and join us in the Native Plant Hunt! The above activities are conducted by the Building and Environment Green Volunteers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Engineering and the Central Nature Reserve volunteers.
