Nature activities and events happening this week 12-18 Apr 2004 16 Apr (Fri): Seminar on "Dive Conservation and the Environment" during Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) Time: 1.30-5pm, Hall 401, Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre Please note: $15 charge for this seminar For ADEX proper, on Sat and Sun there is a $6 admission charge There will also be a booth with photos featuring our marine life, especially those on our Southern Shores. Programme of conservation seminar on 16 Apr (Fri) 1.30pm: Dive Conservation & Environment by Michael Aw, Chairman, OceaNEnvironment Australia, Publisher, Asian Geographic Magazine, Scuba Diver Magazine: 'Reef Watchers' as way to learn and contribute to monitoring the health of our reefs; appreciating coral reef habitats; awareness of reef life; The patch reef dive - diversity & density, behaviour; Big fish sighting- sharks, groupers, napoleon wrasse 1.40pm: Fin-ished business: An overview of the global trade in shark fins by Victor Wu Wildlife Campaigner WildAid. This talk will examine the current scale of the global shark fin trade. It will give an insight of the complex trade mechanics from the producer to the consumer end. The talk will also look at the impact irresponsible fisheries has had on shark populations worldwide. 2.20pm: Break 2.40pm: The reprieve of Chek Jawa by N. Sivasothi Research Officer Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore: Lessons for marine conservation in Singapore A newly discovered jewel, Chek Jawa, motivated desperate biodiversity inventories, data submissions and public education efforts in 2001. As thousands were provided a last glimpse of this natural wonder, government granted a last minute, unprecedented reprieve. The complex process and its lessons for marine conservation issues in Singapore are discussed. 3.20pm: Marine Protected Areas - Their importance for biodiversity protection, sustainable fisheries and eco-tourism development in Indonesia by Dr Peter Mous Science and Training Manager The Nature Conservancy - Southeast Asia Center for Marine Protected Areas, Indonesia. The threatened status of marine ecosystems has resulted in an increasing interest in marine parks or Marine Protected Areas. Also in developing nations such as Indonesia, Marine Protected Areas are being established in partnership between communities, government agencies and non-governmental organisations. This presentation explains how The Nature Conservancy in Indonesia supports the development of Marine Protected Area networks that provide commercial benefits for eco-tourism and fisheries, while protecting the biodiversity of the most diverse reefs on Earth. 4.00pm Panel Discussion and Questions & Answers How divers and diving operators can/should contribute EFFECTIVELY with measurable RESULTS to Marine Protected Areas, coral reefs conservation and the Say No to Shark Fins campaign? With the recent opening of the Beach front Boardwalk, this walk has become even more interesting. Conducted by the Green Volunteer Network, the entire walk would take about 2 hours and please bring along your own water and wear comfortable walking shoes/sandals. Contact: info@gvn.com.sg or 6337 6062. 17 Apr (Sat): Free guided walk of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details Contact: sbwr@pacific.net.sg or call 6794 1401 18 Apr (Sun): Birdwatching at Gymkhana Avenue Time: 7.30am. Meet at the junction of Andrew Road and Jalan mashhor. Open only to NSS members and associates Alan Owyong of the Nature Society (Singapore) introduces the wooded area behind the Bukit Brown Cemetery which supports a variety of birds like woodpeckers, bulbuls, parakeets, cockatoos and pigeons. Introduced species are also likely to be encountered in this birdwatching site that is quite 'tucked away' from the city noise. Come enjoy a morning of quiet solitude amidst the calls of birds and the green of the trees. Contact: More details about the Nature Society (Singapore). Open only to NSS members and associates Shawn Lum and the Plant Group of the Nature Society (Singapore) conducts the last of their Forest Fragementation walks. This park is a complex mosaic of forest fragments of various kinds. Get acquainted with these as well as place them in the larger context of conservation of the Central Catchment Reservoir, Singapore's primary repository of rainforest biodiversity.
