Nature activities and events happening this week 29 Mar-3 Apr 2004 30 Mar (Tue): Launch of BP Science Centre Guidebooks on Herbs and Spices by Wee Yeow Chin; and on Sea Stars and Echinoderms by David Lane and Didier Vandenspiegel Time: 10am followed by a reception Place: The Maxwell theatre, Singapore Science Centre The Guide to Herbs and Spices by Wee Yeow Chin includes the cultural uses of more than 60 plants herbs and spices origins, descriptions, parts used and active ingredients in each plant and some family recipes! The Guide to Common Sea Stars and Echinoderms of Singapore by David J W Lane and Didier Vandenspiegel encapsulates almost a decade of research on these creatures done in waters around Singapore by the authors. This information has been put into this laymanıs guide which features more than 120 species of echinoderms. The launch by Mr Mohamad Maidin B P M Senior Parliamentary Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of the Environment Programme will include a slide presentation by the authors. It's also a great chance to catch up with the biodiversity community. All are welcome but re-registration required (for catering arrangements). Contact: rsvp@science.edu.sg 2 April (Fri): Free public talk on nature photography and its impact on conservation of wildlife by Joe and Mary Ann McDonald Time: 6-9pm Place: Singapore Art Museum, Glass Hall In this talk, professional nature photographers from the US, Joe and Mary Ann McDonald will share their experiences and excitement of their expeditions; and their worries of the threat of a diminishing natural habitat caused by rapid development, through their captured images. They are particularly concerned about the future of the magnificent game parks in Africa and they will outline in the talk, how photographers can have an impact on the conservation process by highlighting these issues with their photos. Place: Singapore Art Museum Mangroves are super-fun areas to explore, with lots of 'Pokemon' type real-life characters. We will have fun while learning about mangroves in this art-craft workshop which is open to kids 5-11 years old and limited to 30 children. Participation fee $5/child. Pre-registration required. Conducted by the Singapore Art Museum of the National Heritage Board and the National Library. You'll learn and see more about the plants and animals of the secondary forest and wetlands of the Lower Peirce Reservoir. More details. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. Open only to NSS members and associates Have a morning of fun and laughter with the ever effervescent and rotund Sutari Supari of the Nature Society (Singapore). Ubin has always been a passion of Sutari's and he knows the island intimately. He will lead us to see Ubin specialities like the Straw-headed Bulbul (an endangered species), the Oriental Pied Hornbill and the naturally occurring Red Junglefowl.
