LTA joins IBM to find green solutions for IT infrastructure

SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and technology giant IBM signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to work on green IT programmes.

The LTA wants to shave a fifth off the energy it uses for information technology, and it plans to achieve the savings over three years through its collaboration with IBM.

One area identified is the cooling of the system. The two organisations are exploring the use of liquid cooling solutions, including water, to cool the IT infrastructure and plough back the savings into other projects.

Assessments will be conducted to identify areas where energy savings can be made. They will then use green technologies and software to carry out pilot tests.

"The success of these pilots will be considered for other control centres we manage in a much bigger way. These could be the control centres for managing the CTE (Central Expressway), KPE (Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway) and all the new MRT lines," said Rosina Howe-Teo, LTA’s chief innovation officer. - CNA/ac
