Save the Earth - let's start with styrofoam

Letter from Toh Li Li (Miss)

WATCHING 'Live Earth' on Channel 5 has motivated me to save the Earth by reducing, recycling and reusing. I hope that more Singaporeans can do their part in saving the Earth.

It sounds like a big project but let's start small - with styrofoam. The use of disposable styrofoam is harmful. It threatens the ozone layer. The gases used in styrofoam are generally not good for the environment.

I would also like to discourage Singaporeans from using any styrofoam material, or scratching it or carving anything on it. I would also like to encourage the manufacturers to do some research and development to replace styrofoam products so that we will be using environmentally-friendly materials.

Styrofoam can hurt animals as it floats in water and is often broken into small pellets, which marine life might eat by mistake. It is known it could clog up their system and starve them to death.
