Political will needed for global response to climate change: George Yeo

SINGAPORE: Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo says there must be political will to bring about a worldwide response to climate change. He was speaking at a meeting of Asian and European (ASEM) foreign ministers in Hamburg, Germany, to discuss climate change.

Mr Yeo said, "With growing numbers of people around the world sensitised, this is a good time. We should start preparing for a post Kyoto regime." He added, "If between Asia and Europe, there is a broad consensus that we should do something, then let us work together now on an effective post Kyoto regime and bring our American friends along."

The Minister said realistically, governments are not going to do the right thing just because it is right.

So what is needed is a combination of moral persuasion and economic incentives. - CNA/yy
