Energy labels for appliances

FROM Jan 1, consumers will be able to shop for air-conditioners and refrigerators based on how much electricity each model uses up.

That is because importers and manufacturers will be required to have labels on these electrical goods to let buyers know how energy efficient they are.

Parliament yesterday passed the Environmental Pollution Control (Amendment) Bill, which makes such labels compulsory by next year.

The more ticks there are on the label, the more energy-efficient the appliance. An air-conditioner with a label that has three ticks can save $500 a year in electricity costs. This is significant compared to the upfront cost of an air-conditioner - about $2,000.

It would also reduce carbon emissions by about 1,400kg a year, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim said.

The law passed yesterday also increased the maximum composition sum for offences under the act, in particular for construction noise pollution.
