Floods and S'pore demand push up price of Johor sand

JOHOR BARU - THE recent floods in Johor and an increase in demand from Singapore have pushed up the price of mining sand in the state by 10 per cent to 20 per cent.

Johor Master Builders Association chairman Dai Xi Cheng said demand for local sand has increased following the floods in December and January, and Indonesia's ban on sand exports to Singapore.

He said the price of mining sand has gone up to RM480 (S$210) per lorry, the Oriental Daily News reported yesterday.

Indonesia imposed the sand ban in February, citing environmental concerns.

Singapore has since turned to other countries for its supplies.

Mr Dai told the Chinese-language newspaper that there is no acute shortage of mining sand in Johor, and the decline in supply has not affected the progress of construction works.

A local building materials dealer surnamed Zheng expressed concern that the shortage of sand would prompt some rogue developers to use river sand mixed with mining sand in their work, resulting in inferior buildings.
