Go green for these awards
Lin Yanqin

THE Singapore Environment Achievement Awards (SEAA) are back for the ninth time, and nominations are now open.

The awards honour organisations dedicated to the protection of the natural environment and aim to recognise companies that are committed to environmentally-sustainable business management practices.

They are the only local awards that address environmental initiatives and are organised by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (Acca).

The SEAA, which include the SEC-Senoko Power Green Innovation Awards that were inaugurated last year, also aim to encourage the creation of innovative and environmentally-friendly products.

The collaboration between SEC and Acca also brings the Acca Singapore Environmental and Social Reporting Awards--in its fifth year--into the event. These will honour companies that maintain a high level of transparency in reporting their environmental practices.

Past winners of the SEAA in the various categories include City Developments, Singapore Airlines, and Nanyang Polytechnic.

Said the SEC's executive director Howard Shaw: "Besides presenting a good opportunity to keep checks on the potential adverse impacts of business management, these awards will ... highlight the importance of inculcating green and sustainable practices into businesses. This will certainly give recognition to deserving companies and hopefully inspire more businesses to follow suit in the green wave."

Acca Singapore head Penelope Phoon added: "The partnership between Acca and SEC will send a signal to companies that we are united and strongly committed to drive home the importance of sustainable business practices for a better tomorrow."

The awards will be held in March next year. Those interested can visit www.sec.org.sg/seaa/applications.htm and www.accaglobal.com/ sustainability/awards/sera/ for details.
