Habitat encroachment leading to tiger-human deaths in Sumatra

JAKARTA (AFP) - Increasing encroachment by humans into the forest habitat of tigers has contributed to the deaths of three people and five tigers this year in one Indonesian province, a wildlife activist has said.

"Our records show that there have been 10 incidents of conflict pitting humans and tigers against each other in Riau province this year," said Osmantri from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on Tuesday.

He said that three people and five endangered Sumatran tigers had been left dead from the confrontations, with the latest casualty being a woman who was mauled to death in Riau's Rokan Hilir district in August.

Tigers have also been venturing more frequently into villages or plantations on the edge of forests seeking food.

Sumatra is the only island where tigers can still be found in Indonesia, with the Indonesian nature conservancy agency estimating that only 200 to 300 remain.
