Inter-ministry group set up to co-ordinate energy strategies

By Loh Kim Chin

The Singapore government is setting up an inter-ministry Energy Policy Group to formulate and co-ordinate the country's national energy strategies. This was revealed by the Minister of State for Trade and Industry, S Iswaran, on Thursday.

Speaking at an industry event, he said the policy group will serve to better coordinate energy and energy-related strategies and policies to respond to the evolving energy environment.

Mr S Iswaran said: "Energy policy is complex and multi-faceted. Singapore has to maintain a fine balance between the sometimes conflicting objectives of economic competitiveness, environmental sustainability and energy security."

The Energy Policy Group will be led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry. It will comprise officials from several key ministries such as the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Finance.

It will also include government agencies like the Energy Market Authority, the Economic Development Board, the National Environment Agency, the Land Transport Authority and the Building and Construction Authority. - CNA/ch
