"A Singapore Album" to share personal stories through photographs

By Dominique Loh

SINGAPORE: A photo album project is underway to get Singaporeans to share their family stories through photographs. Called "A Singapore Album", it is an intimate look into the lives of Singaporeans.

"I think this project is a step towards self-discovery. As we collect the data, photographs and memorabilia, we will discover what is common to Singapore and what we hold valuable and how we recognise ourselves as Singaporeans," said Goh Eck Kheng, Project Organiser, "A Singapore Album".

"We went through the photographs, trying to annotate the photographs, caption the photographs, and I tell you it was amazing, it brought back so many memories," said Viswa Sadasivan, a contributor to "A Singapore Album".

And it's not just photographs that's sought; one Singaporean even contributed her late father's guitar. "This was his last guitar and it's very precious to my mother and well there are photographs of the guitar which is central to the family, important to all of us too," said Carla Barker, daughter of the late E W Barker.

The Barker family forbears came in the 1840s, and are an old Singapore family. Mr E W Barker was a first generation minister, and a fourth generation Singaporean. The former minister was an avid musician who often played the instrument at family parties.

The Singapore Album project hopes to get pictures from about 30 families. When completed, the photos will be displayed in an exhibit at the National Museum starting next February.
