Changing winds bring smoke haze from Sumatra fires

SINGAPORE : A change in wind direction on Tuesday sent some of the smoke haze from the Sumatra fires to Singapore.

The skies over Boon Lay, Jurong and West Coast - the southwestern parts of Singapore - were this afternoon clouded by a layer of smog.

The National Environment Agency told Channel NewsAsia that such slightly hazy conditions will continue over the next two to three days, when the wind is expected to remain southwesterly.

Fortunately, the haze had cleared by evening, and the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading as at 4pm was 37 - in the good range.

The NEA said that last weekend, 496 hotspots were detected in Sumatra, especially in Riau, Jambi and South Sumatra. The fires and hotspot activities continued unabated in the southern part of Riau, Jambi and South Sumatra due to the dry weather conditions.

Dense smoke haze had engulfed much of central and southern Sumatra, southern parts of Malacca Straits and the adjoining areas in Peninsula Malaysia. - CNA /ct
