Times Forum 13 May 05 Set up sanctuary for Vesak Day devotees to release animals This improves their chances of survival in the wild Letter from Jason Li Cheuk Hang Being an animal lover, I am extremely saddened to hear in the news that 70% of the animals released on Vesak Day die because they are not used to the new surroundings. It would be a good idea if a special sanctuary can be built for Vesak Day devotees and others to release the animals so that they have a much better chance of survival in the wild. The Singapore Zoological Gardens could dispatch rangers to make sure the animals can survive. Also have strict laws to prevent unscrupulous people from entering the sanctuary to recapture the animals for sale. Vesak Day is a day of celebration, so let us not spoil it by having animals lying dead in the reservoirs and HDB estates. links Letters to the press in 2005 about animal release during Vesak Day Ashley's email about volunteer efforts to stop release of animals.
