MEWR Perception Survey 2005 finds high public satisfaction with Singapore's current state of the environment

The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) conducted a Perception Survey from December 2005 to January 2006 to measure:

a. public satisfaction with Singapore's current state of the environment vis-à-vis three years ago; and

b. public views and participation in various environmental programmes and initiatives.

2. A random sample of 1,080 Singaporeans and non-residents aged 15 and above formed the survey population. The results will be used for planning and evaluation of MEWR?s environmental policies and programmes. Key Survey Findings Satisfaction with the current state of the environment

3. A large majority (99%) of the survey respondents were positive about the current state of the environment, with 64% indicating that Singapore?s state of the environment was much better as compared to three years ago.

4. The top three environmental challenges identified by survey respondents were:
a. Cleanliness of public areas such as streets, hawker centres and toilets (53%)
b. Air pollution (51%)
c. Quality of drinking water (45%)

Satisfaction with public cleanliness

5. Most survey respondents were satisfied with the state of cleanliness in Singapore for public roads (97%), open spaces (93%), drains (87%) and hawker centres (87%).

Satisfaction with air quality

6. The majority (90%) of survey respondents perceived Singapore?s current air quality to be good. As compared to three years ago, 36% perceived that air quality was better while 49% indicated no change.

Satisfaction with water quality

7. The majority (96%) of survey respondents were confident of the quality of our tap water for drinking.

Environmental Practices

Willingness to play a part


8. The majority of survey respondents indicated that they were willing to play a part in energy (95%) and water (97%) conservation.

Purchase of energy and water efficient products

9. 77% of the respondents were willing to pay more for energy efficient appliances, 86% for appliances and devices which help to save water, and 73% for fuel efficient cars.

Recycling

10. Two thirds of the survey respondents (69%) recycled at home. Slightly more than half (56%) indicated that recycling bins were conveniently available.

Waste minimisation

11. About half (51%) of the survey respondents were willing to pay more for their products so that its packaging can be collected and recycled.

12. Three in five persons (61%) perceived that cashiers were issuing too many plastic bags.

Enjoying Our Waters

13. 58% of the survey respondents had never visited reservoirs or reservoir parks. 74% indicated they would visit reservoirs more often if there were better facilities.

Hawker Centres

14. One quarter (25%) of the survey respondents patronised hawker centres more often as compared to three years ago. The key reasons are: affordable food prices, improved cleanliness, and variety of food. 71% would be attracted to patronise hawker centres more often if there were leisure and recreational activities offered at hawker centres such as Pasar Malam.
