Can private homes generate electricity from solar energy for own use?

Nov 2, 2005 I refer to the article 'Singapore to open its first solar cell manufacturing plant' (ST Oct 25).

I was glad to read that finally, sunny Singapore is going to have its own solar manufacturer and possibly a solar generating plant on a reasonable scale.

The wet blanket was when I read that it was not permitted for individual homes and organisations that generate electricity from solar power to sell the electricity back to the national grid.

Can the relevant authorities confirm that as an individual home owner, I am permitted to generate electricity from solar energy for powering my home or at least part of it? I know that such a practice of allowing excess electricity to be fed back to the grid is done in advanced countries. Why is this not permitted in Singapore?
