Recycling can start from homes
Letter from Leonard Leng Qi An

I am glad to see that people are more aware of the need to protect our planet Earth (Reduce Waste like Taipei, Sunday Times Sept 11, and Cost savings from using fewer plastic grocery bags, ST Online Forum Sept 13).

The reduction of waste is not effective yet in Singapore because of lack of interest. This includes the use of plastic bags. Many shops and supermarkets still give shoppers plastic bags for small items. Cashiers should be reminded to ask whether the shopper needs them.

Waste should also be recycled. Recycling can start from your household. Instead of having one bin for waste, have three instead: one for metals, another for paper and the third bin for other types of waste. I have three bins at home.

Housing estates and the National Environmental Agency can encourage this by providing large recycling bins at community centres or MRT stations. This would make it convenient for people and also serve as a constant reminder for them to recycle.

Metal recycling bins can be placed next to vending machines and paper waste recycling bins can be put in offices. These measures would make the public more mindful about where they throw their waste.

If we continue to disregard recycling or reducing waste, Singapore will soon run out of places to dump them, just as planet Earth will continue to deteriorate.
