8 Oct (Wed): Free presentation on ‘The Food Garden’
Time: 7pm.
Place: Geylang East Community Library, Auditorium (3rd floor)


A Presentation by Betty L. Khoo and Faizah Jama who will take you on an exploration of the super-NATURAL realms to discover how humans, animals and plants are ONE, woven into an inter-dependent web-of-all-life. Learn how ancient cultures and today’s Organic & Bio-dynamic farmers work with Nature spirits (elementals) and the Planets to produce truly nutritious food and even make Rain…naturally. Don’t miss this evening of ‘Re-visiting our Roots in Nature’ through slides, pictorial displays, music and poetry.

11-12 Oct (Sat-Sun): Singapore Bird Race 2003
Closing date for sign up: 4 Oct

Organised by the Nature Society (Singapore), you are guaranteed fun and friendly competition, the sun, moon, maybe rain, mud and sand, and of course, the birds. Flag off 1600hrs on 11 Oct (Sat) at the Hindhere Nature Park, end 12 Oct (Sun) at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Visitors Centre with an outdoor dinner reception and prize presentation.

Open to NSS & non-NSS members. Enrol in either the 24-hour ‘Advanced’ or the 19-hour ‘Novice’ categories.Each team must have a minimum of three participants and not more than four.

$40 per participant (NSS member)
$50 per participant (Non-NSS member/Special invited participants).
The fee will cover pre-race refreshments, souvenirs and the post-race dinner.

International Fees : S$200 per paticipant, inclusive of 2 nights hotel accomodation. Local guide will be attached during the race. Individual participantscan join a local team.

During this event, the Bird Group will also launch a new birdsong CD "Birdsongs of Singapore" by Sutari Supari with a 'live' performance by himself.

11 Oct (Sat): Guided Nature Walk at Pulau Ubin
Time: 10am

You’ll see orchards, vegetable gardens, mangroves, prawn farms and coconut plantations. Meet 10am at Changi Point Jetty, under angsana tree nearest to jetty. More details about Ubin and about the walk on the GVN website.

11 Oct (Sat): Free guided walk at
Botanic Gardens Rainforest Trail

Time: 9am, 10am, 11am, 4pm

You'll see giant rainforest trees and learn about them and the other plants and animals that they shelter. Register 15 minutes earlier at the Visitor Centre. More details.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Time: 9am, 10am, 3pm, 4pm

You'll see the fabulous plants and animals of the mangroves and freshwater wetlands. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Usual entry charges apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details

12 Oct (Sun): Free guided walk at
MacRitchie Prunus Trail

Time: 9.30am and 10.30am. Meet at entrance of the trail, about 300m from the fishing ground, MacRitchie Reservoir Park. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book.

12 Oct (Sun): Butterfly Walk at Pasir Ris Park
Time: 9.30am. Meet at Pasir Ris MRT station control.
Open only to NSS members and associates

Simon Chan of the Butterfly Interest Group, Nature Society (Singapore) will lead the 3-hour walk. Butterflies seen here include mangrove species like the King Crow, Blue Glassy Tiger, Dark Glassy Tiger, Plain Banded Awl skipper and many others. As it is near the town, urban species like the Lime Butterfly and Striped Albatross can occasionally be seen.This walk will last about three hours. Don’t forget to bring your water bottle.
