Nature activities and events happening this week 15-21 SEP 2003 16 Sep (Tue): Nature on Film ("Life in the Trees") Time: 1-2pm Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS Science Faculty, Block S6, Level 3. Public Gallery AVA Room Free screening of note-worthy nature documentaries, local and international. During the months of Jul to Sep, the screenings will feature the BBC and David Attenborough's survey of mammals. This is the eighth of 10 episodes. The series includes spectacular, often never before seen footage of 4000 mammal species from tiny two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; from the ugly naked mole rat to the adorable human baby. Place: Geylang East Community Library, Auditorium (3rd floor) Do we recycle? And if we do, why do we do it? Tan Choon Ming's talk promises to be stimulating and enlightening. He aims to examine recycling in Singapore. Currently, the approach taken is to increase recycling through education and systemising the existing recycling trade or culture. An alternative approach might be to understand recycling from a more holistic standpoint, one which encompasses environmental problems at the international level and relates these problems to our recycling efforts. The speaker aims to seek points-of-view from the audience on recycling. Contact: contact@nss.org.sg or call 6741 2036. 18-21 Sep (Thu-Sun): Singapore Orchid Festival Place: Singapore Botanic Gardens Time: 9am-9pm Event highlights include an Orchid Show featuring award winning orchids, landscape and cut flower displays, ikebana exhibits, an Orchid Heritage Exhibition, talks on orchid cultivation and conservation, a photography exhibition, sales of plants, books and other related items. Contact: Visitor Services, 6471 7361 or NPARKS_SBG_Visitor_Services@NPARKS.GOV.SG 20 Sep (Sat): Free talk on “Finding Nemo” Time: 3.30-5.30pm Place: Woodlands Regional Library, Amazon Room (Level 1) Look no further, Nemo’s here in your backyard and he needs your help! The movie “Finding Nemo” has motivated interest in various marine organisms. Ms Zeehan Jaafar unveils the lifestyle of Nemo and other clownfishes: how they find a life partner, look after babies, and grow up, who's the boss and about how they change sex! She will explain why clownfishes love to hang out around anemones and how both benefit for this special relationship. Guess what? Nemo lives in the surprisingly rich waters of Singapore too! But all is not well because of things like pollution - plastic which come mainly from the land, for example! Our precious hard corals are being taken out of the sea and there is a thriving trade in selling marine animals. Come along to find out if anyone is doing anything about this and how you too can help in simple ways. Zeehan Jaafar is currently a graduate student at the Marine Biology Laboratory, NUS conducting taxonomical research on mudskippers and other goby fishes. Her main interest is the biology, ecology and behaviour of coastal and reef fishes. She has been active as a volunteer guide with the NUS Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research and is one of the contributors to the recently launched Chek Jawa Guidebook. 20 Sep (Sat): Butterfly walk at MacRitchie Trail Time: 9.30am. Meet at the Little Sisters of the Poor. Open only to NSS members and associates Steven Neo of the Butterfly Interest Group, Nature Society (Singapore) will take you on a 3-hour walk. Species seen here include the secretive Royal Assyrian, the seasonal Banded Yeoman and the similar-looking Rustic, the very rare Dark Blue Jungle Glory, the very colorful Malay Lacewing and many more species. This walk will last about three hours to end at the carpark of the Singapore Island Country Club. Contact: More details at the NSS Butterfly Interest Group website. This event is open only to invited guests, but the trail will be open to the public from the afternoon onwards.
