8 Sep (Mon): Animal Fun Workshop for Kids
Time: 2-3.30pm
Place: Tampines Regional Library

AnimalWatch, a registered animal welfare group in Singapore, has been busy researching for and designing a pilot programme on inculcating respect for animals in children aged 7 - 9 using story-reading and interactive learning methods. The aim is for children to have fun, be moved and leave the session with empathy for animals. The session will be run by AnimalWatch volunteer, Leigh McDonald, a professional actress from London who starred in "The Forbidden City". Each session will take in 25 participants, pre-registration required. More details.

9 Sep (Tue): Nature on Film ("Return to the Water")
Time: 1-2pm
Place: Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, NUS Science Faculty, Block S6, Level 3. Public Gallery AVA Room

Free screening of note-worthy nature documentaries, local and international. During the months of Jul to Sep, the screenings will feature the BBC and David Attenborough's survey of mammals. This is the seventh of 10 episodes. The series includes spectacular, often never before seen footage of 4000 mammal species from tiny two-inch pygmy shrew to the enormous blue whale; from the sloth to the swift cheetah; from the ugly naked mole rat to the adorable human baby.

Each episode about 50 minutes long. AVA Room capacity: about 30. No food and drinks allowed at the venue. For more details.

Time: 10am

You’ll see orchards, vegetable gardens, mangroves, prawn farms and coconut plantations. Meet 10am at Changi Point Jetty, under angsana tree nearest to jetty. More details about Ubin.

13 Sep (Sat): Plant Walk at Bishan Park
Time: 3pm. Meet at the void deck of Blk 218 facing Bishan Road.
Open only to NSS members and associates

David Tng, Silver Huang and the Plant Group will introduce Bishan Park, one of Singapore’s largest parks with a nice selection of ornamental trees, palms and shrubs. Parks are so close to our hearts, adding a touch of serenity to our neighbourhoods. And childhood visits may have played a part in our initiation to appreciating nature. To add something closer to our stomachs, there is also a small vegetable garden where one may see various vegetables up close and personal instead of just on our plates!

Botanic Gardens Rainforest Trail

Time: 9am, 10am, 11am, 4pm

You'll see giant rainforest trees and learn about them and the other plants and animals that they shelter. Register 15 minutes earlier at the Visitor Centre. More details.

13 Sep (Sat): PrawnWatch at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Time: 9.30am, please be at the Visitor Centre by 9am

View a demonstration of the traditional method of prawn harvesting. Learn how the tides play a part in this activity. The demonstration is free but usual entry charges to the Reserve apply: $1 per adult, 50cents per child /student/senior citizen. More details

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

14 Sep (Sun): Birdwatching at
the Central Catchment Forest (Rifle Range)

Time: 7.30am. Meet at the junction of Dunearn Road and Rifle Range Road.
Open only to NSS members and associates

Willie Foo and Tan Ju Lin lead this trip to view forest edge species. Wonder if the Red-crowned Barbet, the Chestnut-bellied Malkoha and the Purple-throated Sunbird are still around? Trip will end at the edge of the serene Upper Peirce Reservoir.

14 Sep (Sun): Wood Sculpture Workshop on
the Hopea sangal ("Changi Tree")
and Talk on "Trees and our nature"

Time: all day
Place: Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts,
Wilkie Campus, 11 Upper Wilkie Road

Part of a month-long event organised by the Singapore Sculpture Society to carve historical vignettes on the trunk of the Hopea sangal ("Changi Tree") that was felled in Nov 02. Sculpturing of the pieces of the recovered trunk begins 2 Sep and is expected to end 2 Oct. Nine sculptors will be involved in this project.

On 14 Sep (Sun), the public can attend a workshop from 10am-12 noon, and a talk by Dr Shawn Lum of the Nature Society (Singapore) at 3.30-4.30pm on "Trees and our nature". Admission $10. From 6-14 Sep, the public may also visit the working site and talk the artists from 9am-5pm. MacRitchie Prunus Trail

Time: 9.30am and 10.30am. Meet at the entrance of the trail, about 300m from the fishing ground, MacRitchie Reservoir Park. To join the guided tour, you will need to pre-book.
