Cliona sp.*
Family Clionaidae
updated Oct 2016
Where seen? Looking like a sprinkle of orange coins, this spong is sometimes seen on reefy shores in the South.

Features:
Most of this burrowing sponge is hidden. The sponge can bore holes in calcium carbonate skeletons, snail shells to make a home where they live. What is seen on the outside are small sucker-like disks (0.2-1cm).

Cliona aff utricularis are bright reddish orange. Other Cliona species may be yellow.
