Sea
fan winged oysters
awaiting
identification
Family Pteriidae
updated May 2020
Where
seen? These strangely shaped clams grow attached to sea
fans. They are sometimes seen on our Northern shores.
What are winged oysters? Winged
oysters belong to the Family Pteriidae. , but those attached to sea fans
do not produce pearls.
Features: 2-6cm long. The two-part
shell is thin, and an asymmetrical winged shape, somewhat resembling a sailing boat. Those with small shells may be shiny and smooth. Those with large shells seem to be 'hairy' and thus covered in sediments and well camouflaged. It attaches to the sea fan with strong byssus threads. |
Several may be seen on one sea fan.
