our wild singapore: Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
mms upload for 8 Aug 04 (Sun)

08/08/04 08:35 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #1:
Today am guiding at Buloh. The Reserve is all dressed up for National Day!
08/08/04 08:47 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #2:
First, a lovely quiet breakfast on the deck at the cafe overlooking a tranquil pond filled with koi and dragonfishes.
08/08/04 08:58 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #3:
And here are my new friends from the Conceicao family who "accidentally" came to Buloh earlier on (dad had a nail in the car tyre and they stopped by while he got it fixed) and returned for a proper visit. How nice! Tasha and Kevin are having a closer look at some of the fishes that can be found at the Reserve.
08/08/04 09:06 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #4:
We take a closer look at the mangroves on the Mangrove Boardwalk. Here is the rest of the family with tiny baby Nicole. We start finding all kinds of mudskippers, crabs and creepy crawlies. And marvel at mangrove tree roots and the Nipah Palm.
08/08/04 09:19 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #5:
Kevin is excellent at spotting ALL the crabs and dad is finding some of his own too.
08/08/04 09:24 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #6:
We stop at the hide with ceilings beautifully decorated with tiles hand painted by kids. Usually, there is a beautiful mangrove pit viper nearby but he is not here today: to the disappointment of Tasha, but relief of mum.
08/08/04 09:36 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #7:
We meet up with another happy family at another hut. They have spotted a pair of Collared kingfishers, bright blue among the trees.
08/08/04 09:41 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #8: On the way back to the Visitor Centre, we stop to take a closer look at the beautiful flowers of the Sea Poison tree. Wow! It's so delicate. Pity they only last one night.
08/08/04 09:45 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #9:
We meet the Malay family again, this time posing with the beautiful flowers of the Seven Golden Candlesticks plant. The plant is used as a traditional remedy for ringworm, a fungus that loves to grow between your toes if you don't wash well :-)
208/08/04 09:47 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #9:
We stop for breakfast at the Visitor Centre. Tasha has a closer look at the monitor lizard basking out at the edge of the pond.
08/08/04 10:15 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #10:
On the way out to the Main Hide, there is a big patch of Black Lilies in full bloom. Tasha takes a closer look at these strange flowers.
08/08/04 10:16 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #11:
And here is your closer look. Truly spectacular and bizarre!
08/08/04 10:17 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #12:
On the Main Bridge we have a look at the Archerfishes, huge and hungry roaming the low waters. Mum spots the Big Green Mussels growing on the pillars, yummy! We also saw a big green Garfish, swimming among the smaller halfbeaks. There was also a Little Heron resting on a branch by the river bank. Alas, no otters or monitor lizards.
08/08/04 10:22 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #14: We stop at the Main Hide. The Aerie Hide looks very tempting but baby Nicole is already tired and we decide to visit it another day.
08/08/04 10:27 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #15:
Kevin has a last look out of the Main Hide. A highly intelligent little man, he insists on taking a different view of everything, including the binoculars. He specifically made me look through them "the other way around" and indeed, I must agree with him, a truly different view of life. Kevin will no doubt grow up to do great things, and give his mum lots of heart attacks in between :-)

Here's hoping this kid will grow up to be a Real Wild Person

My wish too! Kevin's mum shared many stories of his wild exploits. He really loves nature too. There's hope yet with such young ones, and parents that introduce them early to our wild places.
08/08/04 10:47 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #16:
On the way out, I got distracted by the strange asymmetrical blooms of the Scaevola plant growing by the butterfly path that leads to the carpark.
08/08/04 10:49 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #17:
And the butterflies were really out and about today. They are so "tame" that I could even take a reasonably close picture with camera phone.
08/08/04 11:55 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #18:
And oh, before I forget, earlier in the morning while waiting to start the guided walks, I browsed the fantastic photos at the "Close Ups of Sungei Buloh" exhibition at the Reserve. Jeremy Ang and Tay Soon Liang of the Reserve are sharing some of their amazing work. This beautiful shot by Jeremy is truly marvellous.
08/08/04 11:55 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #19:
Another photo by Jeremy of the secretive but fascinating little bats that live in our Reserve.
08/08/04 11:58 Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve #20 (last): And Tay's wonderful super sharp shot of a flock of Whimbrels in flight is just simply breath-taking. The photos alone are worth a trip to the Reserve! (Camera phone couldn't keep out the glare of the lamination over the photos, that's why these images look so strange on the blog.)
